Fajr Prayer
The dawn prayer and the beginning of the Muslim's daily cycle of obligatory worship.
What is Fajr prayer?
Fajr is the first of the five obligatory daily prayers in Islam. It is performed at dawn, before sunrise, and consists of two obligatory rak'ahs.
The word Fajr refers to dawn. Its prayer time begins with true dawn, when light starts spreading horizontally across the horizon, and continues until sunrise.

Fajr in the Qur'an
The Qur'an gives special attention to worship at dawn. In Qur'an 17:78, believers are commanded to establish prayer and the verse specifically refers to the recitation at dawn, describing it as witnessed.

Authentic hadith explain that the angels of the night and the angels of the day gather at the time of Fajr prayer.
Why is Fajr important?
Fajr begins the day with worship before ordinary daily activity takes over. It requires a person to leave sleep, prepare for prayer, and remember Allah while the world is transitioning from darkness into daylight.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the angels of the night and day meet at the Fajr and Asr prayers. This gives Fajr a distinctive place among the daily prayers.
Fajr is therefore not simply a morning routine. It represents discipline, remembrance, and beginning the day with an act of worship.
The two Sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr
Before the two obligatory rak'ahs of Fajr, Muslims are strongly encouraged to pray two Sunnah rak'ahs.
These two rak'ahs were particularly emphasized by the Prophet ﷺ. In Sahih Muslim, A'ishah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that the two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and what it contains.
When does Fajr begin?
Fajr begins at true dawn, traditionally called al-fajr al-sadiq. This is when the first horizontal light of dawn becomes visible across the horizon.
The Fajr prayer must be performed after true dawn begins and before the sun rises.
This is why a prayer schedule normally lists Fajr and Sunrise as two separate times. Sunrise is not another prayer; it marks the end of the Fajr prayer window.
Fajr and fasting
Fajr also plays an important role in Islamic fasting. During Ramadan and other fasts, the daily fasting period begins with the arrival of true dawn.
Qur'an 2:187 describes eating and drinking during the night until the light of dawn becomes distinguishable from the darkness of night. From that point until sunset, the fast is observed.
Because of this, understanding the distinction between Fajr and sunrise is especially important during Ramadan.
Fajr and sunrise are not the same
Fajr occurs before sunrise. The beginning of Fajr is determined by dawn, while sunrise occurs later when the sun itself begins to appear above the horizon.
True dawn begins. The Fajr prayer time starts.
The sun begins to rise. The Fajr prayer time ends.
